2017 Indian vice-presidential election

The 2017 Indian vice-presidential election was held on August 5, 2017, to elect the Vice President of India, succeeding Hamid Ansari, who completed two terms in office. The election was conducted by the Election Commission of India through a secret ballot under the system of proportional representation using single transferable vote. The primary contest was between M. Venkaiah Naidu, the candidate from the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Gopalkrishna Gandhi, the candidate from the opposition's United Progressive Alliance (UPA). Naidu won the election with a significant margin, securing 516 votes against Gandhi's 244. His victory underscored the NDA's dominance in the Indian political landscape at that time.
