1996 Kerala Legislative Assembly election

The 1996 Kerala Legislative Assembly election was held on May 24, 1996, to elect the members of the 11th Legislative Assembly of Kerala. This election was significant as it marked a shift in the political landscape of the state, with the Left Democratic Front (LDF), led by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)), emerging victorious. The LDF secured 99 out of 140 seats, resulting in a decisive defeat for the United Democratic Front (UDF), which won 41 seats. The low voter turnout of approximately 70% reflected a competitive election atmosphere. E. K.
