1989 Sikkim Legislative Assembly election

The 1989 Sikkim Legislative Assembly election was held on March 26, 1989, to elect members of the 32nd Legislative Assembly of Sikkim. This election was significant as it marked the first time since Sikkim's integration into India in 1975 that an election was conducted under the newly amended provisions of the Sikkim Legislative Assembly, reflecting a shift towards a more democratic governance structure. The election witnessed a fierce contest primarily between the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) and the Sikkim Sangram Parishad (SSP), with various independent candidates also participating. The SDF, led by Pawan Chamling, emerged victorious, securing a majority and forming the government, thus laying the foundation for Chamling's long political career and subsequent multiple terms in office.
