1988 Maldives coup d'état attempt

The 1988 Maldives coup d'\u00e9tat attempt, also known as the November Uprising, was a significant political event that occurred on November 3, 1988, in the Maldives. A group of approximately 50 armed insurgents, primarily comprising Maldivian exiles and mercenaries organized by the opposition group NDP (Maldivian National Democratic Party), attempted to overthrow the authoritarian government of President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. The assailants launched a coordinated assault on the capital city, Male, aiming to seize control of key government buildings. However, the coup was met with strong resistance from the Maldivian military and police, resulting in a counter-offensive that ultimately restored order. The incident marked a turning point in Maldivian politics, leading to increased military collaboration with international allies, particularly India.
