1987 Kerala Legislative Assembly election

The 1987 Kerala Legislative Assembly election was held on 23 June 1987 to elect members of the 7th Kerala Legislative Assembly. Marking a significant political event in the south Indian state of Kerala, the election saw the United Democratic Front (UDF), led by the Indian National Congress under the leadership of R. Sankar, emerge victorious against the rival Left Democratic Front (LDF), led by the Communist Party of India (Marxist). The election was characterized by high voter turnout and issues such as unemployment and social welfare dominating the electoral discourse. The UDF won 98 seats out of 140, enabling it to form the government, while the LDF secured 41 seats. The election underscored the fluctuating political landscape of Kerala, reflecting the ongoing rivalry between the two coalitions.
