1987 Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly election

The 1987 Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly election was held in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir from November 1987 to December 1987. This election, conducted under a backdrop of rising political tensions and armed conflict, saw the National Conference (NC), led by Farooq Abdullah, contesting against the Indian National Congress (INC) and various other political entities, notably the Muslim United Front (MUF), which sought to represent the interests of the region's Muslim majority. The election was marred by widespread allegations of electoral fraud, manipulation, and intimidation, leading to significant discontent among voters. The NC emerged victorious, securing a majority, but the perceived illegitimacy of the electoral process contributed to increased unrest and the eventual escalation of militancy in the Kashmir Valley.
