1983 Karnataka Legislative Assembly election

The 1983 Karnataka Legislative Assembly election was held on February 5, 1983, to elect members to the 7th Karnataka Legislative Assembly. This election was significant as it marked the consolidation of the Indian National Congress (INC) under the leadership of Chief Minister G. Parameshwara, who sought to maintain the party's dominance in the state. The INC faced a challenging electoral landscape with the rise of the Janata Party, which had formed the previous government. Voter turnout was reported at approximately 70%, reflecting substantial public engagement. The results led to the INC securing a decisive majority, winning 141 out of 224 seats, thus enabling G. Parameshwara to continue as Chief Minister, reaffirming the party's influence in Karnataka politics during the early 1980s.
