1982 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election

The 1982 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election was held in West Bengal, India, over a single phase on June 6, 1982. This election was conducted to elect the members of the 8th West Bengal Legislative Assembly. The ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)), part of the Left Front coalition, aimed to reaffirm its governance following a strong mandate in the previous election in 1977. The Left Front, led by Chief Minister Jyoti Basu, sought to showcase its socio-economic policies and development agenda. The main opposition, the Indian National Congress, aimed to regain power through a campaign highlighting issues of governance and social justice. The election recorded significant voter turnout and was pivotal in solidifying the political landscape of West Bengal for subsequent years.
