1980 Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly election

The 1980 Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly election was held on June 15, 1980, to elect members of the 6th Legislative Assembly of Madhya Pradesh, India. This election took place in the context of a significant political shift following the Emergency period (1975–1977) and a subsequent general election in 1977, where the Janata Party emerged as the leading political force in the state. The Indian National Congress, under the leadership of Arjun Singh, sought to regain power by capitalizing on discontent with the Janata government's policies. The Congress party won a decisive victory, securing 206 out of 288 seats, while the Janata Party suffered substantial losses. This election marked a resurgence of the Congress party in Madhya Pradesh politics, establishing Singh as Chief Minister.
