1980 Kerala Legislative Assembly election

The 1980 Kerala Legislative Assembly election was held on 23 April 1980 to elect the members of the Sixth Kerala Legislative Assembly. This election marked a significant political event in the southern Indian state of Kerala, with the Indian National Congress (INC) emerging as the dominant party. Under the leadership of K. Karunakaran, the INC secured 101 out of 140 seats, enabling it to form the government. The opposition, primarily comprised of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)), experienced a decline in their representation, winning 38 seats. Voter turnout for this election was approximately 75%, reflecting robust public participation. The outcome reaffirmed the Congress party's influence in Kerala's political landscape during the early 1980s.
