1978 Meghalaya Legislative Assembly election

The 1978 Meghalaya Legislative Assembly election was held on February 27, 1978, as the first legislative assembly elections in the newly formed state of Meghalaya, India. Following the bifurcation of the state from Assam in 1972, the election was pivotal in establishing the political framework of Meghalaya. The Indian National Congress (INC) emerged as the dominant party, securing a significant majority in the 60-member assembly. Chief Minister D.D. Lapang led the INC, which campaigned on issues of regional development and ethnic representation. The election was notable for its high voter turnout and marked a critical step in the political evolution of Meghalaya, setting the stage for future governance and party dynamics in the state.
