1977 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election

The 1977 Tamil Nadu legislative assembly election was held on June 6, 1977, to elect members of the 9th Legislative Assembly of Tamil Nadu. This election marked a significant political transition in the state, following the Emergency period (1975–1977) declared by the Indian government. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), led by M. Karunanidhi, sought to regain power after losing in the 1976 local body elections. The opposition Indian National Congress, led by D. Ramachandran, aimed to capitalize on the anti-Congress sentiment prevalent due to the Emergency. The election witnessed a high voter turnout, with the DMK emerging victorious, securing 137 out of 234 seats, thereby restoring its governance. This election is noted for its implications on regional politics and the resurgence of Dravidian identity in Tamil Nadu.
