1976 Indian Rajya Sabha elections

The 1976 Indian Rajya Sabha elections were conducted to fill 22 of the 250 seats in the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of India's Parliament. These elections were particularly significant as they occurred during a period of national Emergency declared by then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, which lasted from June 1975 to March 1977. The elections, marked by political upheaval and restrictions on civil liberties, saw the ruling Indian National Congress aiming to consolidate its power amidst widespread political dissent. The results reinforced the dominance of the Congress party in the Rajya Sabha, with many of its candidates elected unopposed. The elections highlighted the tense political climate of India during this tumultuous period.
