1975 Sikkimese monarchy referendum

The 1975 Sikkimese monarchy referendum was a pivotal political event held on April 14, 1975, in the Kingdom of Sikkim. This referendum sought public approval for the abolition of the monarchy and the establishment of Sikkim as a state within the Indian Union. The vote was a response to growing discontent with the ruling Chogyal, Palden Thondup Namgyal, and was heavily influenced by political strife and popular movements advocating for democratic governance. With a reported voter turnout of approximately 97%, the referendum resulted in a decisive majority favoring the dissolution of the monarchy, with 97.5% voting in favor. Consequently, Sikkim was formally annexed by India, marking a significant transition in its political landscape and governance.
