1971 Bangladesh atrocities

The 1971 Bangladesh atrocities, also known as the Bangladesh genocide, refers to a series of widespread and systematic killings, sexual violence, and human rights abuses committed during the Bangladesh Liberation War, which led to the independence of Bangladesh from Pakistan. The conflict was marked by the Pakistan Army's brutal crackdown on Bengali nationalists and civilians in East Pakistan, beginning on March 25, 1971. It is estimated that between 300,000 and 3,000,000 individuals were killed, while millions of women experienced sexual violence. The international community largely condemned these actions, yet responses were limited. The atrocities have had lasting impacts on Bangladesh, including ongoing trauma, political repercussions, and calls for justice and recognition of the events as genocide.
