1967 Kerala Legislative Assembly election

The 1967 Kerala Legislative Assembly election was held in Kerala, India, from 23 March to 15 April 1967. This election was significant as it marked a turning point in Kerala's political landscape, witnessing the first time a non-Congress party, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)), emerged victorious. The CPI(M), leading the Left Democratic Front (LDF), secured a plurality of seats, thus forming the government under the leadership of Chief Minister E.M.S. Namboodiripad. The election reflected widespread public discontent with the ruling Indian National Congress, driven by issues such as agrarian reform, socio-economic disparities, and growing awareness of leftist ideologies. The 1967 election fundamentally altered party dynamics in Kerala, contributing to the state's ongoing political evolution.
