1967 Indian presidential election

The 1967 Indian presidential election, held on May 13, 1967, marked a significant moment in India's democratic history as it was the first presidential election following the death of Dr. Zakir Husain, the country's first Muslim President. The election involved the selection of the President of India by an electoral college composed of the elected members of both houses of Parliament and the elected members of the Legislative Assemblies of States and Union territories. Varahagiri Venkata Giri, representing the Indian National Congress, emerged victorious against his primary opponent, the then Vice President Zakir Husain's successor, and former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed. Giri's election signified a consolidation of the Congress party's influence and marked a period of political change in India.
