1957 Indian general election

The 1957 Indian general election, held from February 24 to March 4, marked the second national legislative elections in independent India, following the inaugural election in 1951-52. This election was significant as it solidified the Indian National Congress's dominance in Indian politics, securing a total of 47.8% of the popular vote and winning 371 of the 494 seats in the Lok Sabha, the lower house of Parliament. The election saw the participation of multiple political parties, including the Bharatiya Jana Sangh and the Communist Party of India, but they failed to make substantial gains. Notably, this election was characterized by a relatively high voter turnout of approximately 63.4%, reflecting the increasing political engagement and democratic maturity in the nation. The results reaffirmed Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's leadership and set the stage for continued Congress governance in subsequent years.
