1952 Rajya Sabha elections

The 1952 Rajya Sabha elections were the inaugural elections for the upper house of India's Parliament, the Rajya Sabha, held in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution of India, which came into effect on January 26, 1950. Conducted between March 1952 and June 1952, these elections marked a significant milestone in India's democratic process, enabling states to elect representatives to the Rajya Sabha. Members of the Rajya Sabha are elected through a system of proportional representation using the Single Transferable Vote method. In this election, representatives were chosen by the elected members of state legislative assemblies, with a total of 216 seats contested across various states and Union territories. The elections underscored the federal structure of Indian governance and aimed to facilitate legislative stability and representation at the national level.
