1952 Patiala and East Punjab States Union Legislative Assembly election

The 1952 Patiala and East Punjab States Union Legislative Assembly election was a pivotal electoral contest held in the newly formed Patiala and East Punjab States Union (PEPSU) in India on March 22, 1952. This election marked the first legislative assembly election after the integration of the princely states into the Indian Union following independence in 1947. The Indian National Congress emerged as the dominant political party, securing a significant majority under the leadership of its key figure, Adhir K. Chandan. The election was conducted amidst a backdrop of political realignment and social change, reflecting the aspirations of the newly integrated regions. The assembly consisted of 60 seats, with the Congress winning 49, thereby establishing its authority in the burgeoning democracy of post-independence India.
