1924 Kohat riots

The 1924 Kohat riots were a series of communal clashes that erupted in the town of Kohat, located in present-day Pakistan, instigated by tensions between the Muslim and Hindu communities. Triggered by a minor incident on July 11, 1924, the riots escalated into widespread violence, resulting in significant loss of life and property. Over the course of several days, communal hostilities led to the destruction of businesses, homes, and places of worship, with estimates of casualties ranging from dozens to hundreds. The British colonial authorities implemented martial law to restore order, yet the riots highlighted deep-rooted ethnic and religious divisions in colonial India. The events underscored the urgent need for communal harmony and set the stage for subsequent inter-communal relations in the region.
