1989 Goa Legislative Assembly election

The 1989 Goa Legislative Assembly election was held on 15 January 1989 to elect members of the 30 constituencies of the Goa Legislative Assembly. This election was significant as it marked the first election conducted under the newly instituted Statehood of Goa, which had achieved full statehood from being a Union Territory in 1987. The Indian National Congress emerged as the dominant party, securing a majority with 17 seats, led by Chief Minister Wilfred de Souza. The opposition, primarily represented by the Bharatiya Janata Party and the United Goans Party, sought to challenge Congress's influence in the region. Voter turnout was approximately 68%, reflecting a robust engagement in the democratic process. The election results laid the groundwork for subsequent political developments in Goa.
