1987 Indian presidential election

The 1987 Indian presidential election was held on October 25, 1987, marking a significant political event in India's democratic governance. This election was conducted to select the President of India, following the end of Giani Zail Singh's term. The election was notable for the electoral college system, comprising elected members of both Houses of Parliament and the elected members of the Legislative Assemblies of States and Union territories. The Indian National Congress, led by Rajiv Gandhi, nominated Giani Zail Singh for re-election, while the opposition parties supported R. Venkataraman as their candidate. Venkataraman emerged victorious, assuming office on July 7, 1987, and subsequently serving a five-year term until 1992.
