1984 anti-Sikh riots

The 1984 anti-Sikh riots were a series of violent events that erupted in India following the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984, by her Sikh bodyguards. Triggered by long-standing tensions between the Sikh community and the Indian government, the riots predominantly took place in Delhi but also spread to other parts of the country. Over the course of several days, thousands of Sikhs were killed, and many more were injured or displaced. Properties, places of worship, and businesses belonging to Sikhs were vandalized and destroyed, leading to significant communal strife. The aftermath of the riots raised serious concerns regarding government complicity and systemic failures in protecting the Sikh community, resulting in ongoing debates about justice, accountability, and the implications for inter-religious relations in India.
