1980 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly election

The 1980 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly election was held in Uttar Pradesh, India, to elect members of the 8th Legislative Assembly. This election took place in two phases on 28 June and 2 July 1980, amidst a backdrop of political turbulence following the Emergency period (1975–1977). The Indian National Congress, under the leadership of its state president, Jagadish Narayan, emerged as the dominant party, securing a significant victory. The assembly consisted of 425 constituencies, and the Congress party won 309 seats, allowing it to form the government with a considerable majority. The election was notable for its rapid electoral process and the consolidation of Congress power in the state, influencing regional political dynamics in subsequent years.
