1977 Odisha Legislative Assembly election

The 1977 Odisha Legislative Assembly election was conducted in March 1977, following the national trend of elections after the end of the Emergency in India (1975–1977). This election marked a significant shift in the political landscape of Odisha, as it was the first assembly election post-Emergency and saw the rise of the Janata Party, which emerged as a dominant force in state politics. The elections were held to select members for the 147 constituencies of the Odisha Legislative Assembly. The Janata Party, which opposed the Indian National Congress, captured a majority, leading to a change in governance. Biju Patnaik, a prominent leader and former Chief Minister, emerged as a key figure in the new government. The elections were noted for their high voter turnout and marked a decisive moment in the political realignment of Odisha.
