1977 Goa, Daman and Diu Legislative Assembly election

The 1977 Goa, Daman, and Diu Legislative Assembly election was a significant political event held on 20 March 1977 to elect the members of the first Legislative Assembly of the Union Territory of Goa, Daman, and Diu, India. This marked the first elections following the merger of the territories into a single Union Territory in 1961. The assembly consisted of 30 elected seats, and the election was conducted under the framework established by the Representation of the People Act, 1951. The Indian National Congress, led by R. K. Kamat, emerged victorious, securing a majority in the legislature. The election was characterized by a high voter turnout and a competitive political landscape, reflecting the growing democratic aspirations of the region's populace post-liberalization.
