1974 Sikkimese general election

The 1974 Sikkimese general election was held on April 4, 1974, marking a significant event in the political history of Sikkim, which was then a kingdom in the Himalayas. This election was notable for being the first democratic election held in the state following the constitutional reforms instituted by the Chogyal (King) Palden Thondup Namgyal. The election aimed to establish a legislative assembly and promote a greater degree of self-governance within Sikkim. Candidates representing various political parties, including the Sikkim Sangram Parishad, contested for the 32 available seats. The polls resulted in a landmark victory for the Sikkim Sangram Parishad, leading to enhanced political representation and setting the stage for Sikkim's eventual integration into India in 1975.
