1971 JVP insurrection

The 1971 JVP insurrection, also known as the JVP uprising, was a significant armed rebellion in Sri Lanka led by the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), a Marxist-Leninist political party. The insurrection, which erupted in April 1971, was primarily driven by widespread discontent over socio-economic conditions, unemployment, and political disenfranchisement among the youth and rural populations. The JVP sought to overthrow the Sri Lankan government and establish a communist society. The Sri Lankan state responded with military force, resulting in a violent crackdown that led to thousands of deaths, arrests, and human rights abuses. The uprising was ultimately quelled by May 1971, leaving a lasting impact on Sri Lankan politics and society.
