1971 Indian Rajya Sabha elections

The 1971 Indian Rajya Sabha elections were held to fill the vacant seats in the upper house of Parliament, the Rajya Sabha, representing various states and union territories of India. Conducted in the backdrop of significant political developments, including the Bangladesh Liberation War and the subsequent general elections, the elections took place in a singular context of heightened political engagement. The elections were carried out through a system of indirect voting, where members of legislative assemblies in the states and union territories elected the Rajya Sabha members. As a result, the Indian National Congress, led by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, continued to assert its dominance, reinforcing its political influence in the upper house.
