1971 Bengali Hindu Genocide

The 1971 Bengali Hindu genocide refers to a series of coordinated massacres, systematic killings, and acts of violence targeting the Hindu population of East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) during the Bangladesh Liberation War. Predominantly occurring between March and December 1971, the genocide resulted from rising tensions between Bengali nationalists and the West Pakistani government, particularly following the 1970 general elections. As part of a broader campaign to suppress the independence movement, the military and paramilitary forces targeted Hindus, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of thousands, widespread sexual violence, and the displacement of millions. The genocide is considered a significant tragedy in the history of Bangladesh and continues to impact intercommunal relations in the region.
