1968 Rajya Sabha elections

The 1968 Rajya Sabha elections in India were held to fill the vacancies in the upper house of Parliament, representing various states and Union territories. Conducted in June 1968, these elections were significant as they occurred during a period of political turbulence in the country, reflecting the shifting dynamics within the Indian National Congress and the emergence of opposition parties. A total of 24 seats were contested, with the elections taking place through a system of indirect voting by the elected members of the Legislative Assemblies of the respective states. The results reinforced the dominance of the Congress Party but also indicated the growing political pluralism, as several non-Congress candidates were elected, marking a critical moment in post-independence Indian politics.
