1957 Punjab Legislative Assembly election

The 1957 Punjab Legislative Assembly election was held on March 4, 1957, to elect members to the 2nd Punjab Legislative Assembly in India. This election marked a critical moment in the state's political landscape following the reorganization of states and the establishment of a democratic framework post-independence. The Indian National Congress (INC), led by Chief Minister Partap Singh Kairon, emerged as the dominant force, securing a significant majority with 86 out of 117 seats. The election was characterized by various socio-political issues, including agrarian reforms and communal tensions. The opposition, primarily the Akali Dal and the Communist Party of India, struggled to gain ground, reflecting the INC's widespread support across the diverse Punjabi electorate.
