1952 Indian presidential election

The 1952 Indian presidential election was the inaugural presidential election in India, held on May 2 and 3, 1952, under the provisions of the Constitution of India, which came into effect on January 26, 1950. This landmark election marked the transition from British colonial rule to a democratic republic, establishing the formal process for electing the President of India. Dr. Rajendra Prasad, a prominent leader of the Indian National Congress and a key figure in the Indian independence movement, was elected unopposed as the country's first President. The election was conducted by an electoral college comprising elected members of both houses of Parliament as well as elected members of the Legislative Assemblies of the States and Union territories, underscoring India's commitment to democratic governance.
