1952 Indian general election

The 1952 Indian general election marked the first election held in independent India, commencing on October 25, 1951, and concluding on March 8, 1952. This pivotal event set the foundation for the world's largest democratic exercise, as it involved the election of representatives to the Lok Sabha (House of the People) and state legislative assemblies across the country. Conducted by the newly established Election Commission of India under the leadership of Sukumar Sen, the election faced numerous challenges, including inadequate infrastructure and a diverse electorate. The Indian National Congress emerged as the dominant party, led by Jawaharlal Nehru, securing a significant parliamentary majority, thereby consolidating its position in post-colonial India. The election was a landmark moment in affirming India's commitment to democracy and self-governance.
