1996 Indian Rajya Sabha elections

The 1996 Indian Rajya Sabha elections were held in two phases from June 3 to June 24, 1996, to elect members to the upper house of Parliament, the Rajya Sabha. These elections followed the dissolution of the 10th Lok Sabha and were held concurrently with various state legislative council elections. A total of 77 seats were contested across several states, reflecting a diverse political landscape influenced by regional, national, and coalition parties. The elections were significant in shaping the parliamentary composition during a period of political instability in India, characterized by shifts in alliances and the emergence of new political forces. The resulting composition was pivotal for subsequent governance and policy-making in the country.
