1897 Assam earthquake

The 1897 Assam earthquake, also known as the Shillong earthquake, occurred on June 12, 1897, at approximately 5:13 PM IST, with a magnitude estimated between 8.1 and 8.3 on the moment magnitude scale. Centered near the town of Shillong in present-day Meghalaya, India, this seismic event is one of the most powerful earthquakes recorded in Indian history. The quake caused widespread devastation across the Assam region, resulting in significant destruction of property and infrastructure, as well as considerable loss of life, with estimates ranging from 1,000 to 1,600 fatalities. The earthquake also triggered landslides and resulted in substantial ground deformation. Its impact on local geology and ensuing aftershocks were studied extensively, contributing to the understanding of seismic activity in the region.
