2010 Kashmir unrest

The 2010 Kashmir unrest refers to a series of violent protests and disturbances that erupted in the Indian-administered region of Jammu and Kashmir, following the controversial killing of a teenager, Tufail Matoo, by Indian security forces in June 2010. The unrest marked a significant escalation in longstanding tensions between local civilians and Indian authorities, driven by grievances over human rights abuses, political discontent, and calls for self-determination. Over the course of several months, mass demonstrations, strikes, and clashes resulted in numerous casualties, predominantly among protesters and resulted in an increased military presence in the region. The unrest not only drew national and international attention but also reignited debate regarding the political status of Jammu and Kashmir within India.
