2007 Indian presidential election

The 2007 Indian presidential election was held on July 19, 2007, to elect the 12th President of India, succeeding Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam. The election was conducted through a secret ballot by an electoral college comprising the elected members of both houses of Parliament and the elected members of the Legislative Assemblies of States and Union territories. The main candidates were Pratibha Patil, representing the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), and Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, backed by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Pratibha Patil emerged victorious, becoming the first woman to assume the presidency in India's history. She received 65.38% of the electoral votes, officially taking office on July 25, 2007.
