1856 in India

The year 1856 in India was marked by significant political and social developments, culminating in the buildup to the Indian Rebellion of 1857. The British East India Company's expansionist policies led to widespread discontent among various classes, particularly among Indian princes and soldiers. The annexation of Awadh (Oudh) in February 1856, viewed as an affront to local autonomy and tradition, intensified resentment. This year also witnessed the introduction of new rifle cartridges, rumored to be greased with animal fat, which offended both Hindu and Muslim sepoys, further straining relations between the British and their Indian troops. These factors contributed to increasing unrest, setting the stage for a nationwide uprising against British colonial rule in the following year.
