2001 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election

The 2001 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election was held on April 24, 2001, to elect the members of the 14th Legislative Assembly of Tamil Nadu, India. This election was pivotal, as it arose in the context of a rapidly evolving political landscape influenced by regional parties and coalition dynamics. The incumbent Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), led by M. Karunanidhi, contested against the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), which was led by J. Jayalalithaa. The 2001 elections were notable for their high voter turnout and intense campaigning, showcasing the rivalry between the two major political factions. Ultimately, the AIADMK won a decisive victory, securing 132 of the 234 seats, while the DMK faced significant losses, resulting in a shift in power within the state.
