1821 Light Regiment (India)

The 1821 Light Regiment, originally formed as the 2nd Battalion of the 17th Regiment of Bengal Native Infantry, was a distinguished military unit of the British Indian Army. Established in 1821, it played a pivotal role in the expansion and consolidation of British colonial power in India. The regiment was characterized by its light infantry tactics, enabling rapid mobility and effectiveness in various terrains. Renowned for its participation in key military engagements during the Second Anglo-Burmese War and the Indian Rebellion of 1857, the regiment earned a reputation for bravery and resilience. Eventually, it was re-designated as the 1821 Light Regiment, reflecting its operational legacy until its disbandment in the early 20th century.
