2016 Puducherry Legislative Assembly election

The 2016 Puducherry Legislative Assembly election was held on May 16, 2016, to elect representatives for the 30 seats of the Puducherry Legislative Assembly. This election was significant as it followed the previous election in 2011, amidst a backdrop of political turbulence in the union territory. The Indian National Congress (INC), led by V. Narayanasamy, aimed to regain power after a five-year stint in opposition. The election saw a multi-cornered contest with major parties, including the All India N.R. Congress (AINRC) led by V. Vaithilingam, and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). Voter turnout was approximately 85%, reflecting heightened political engagement among the electorate. Ultimately, the INC emerged victorious, securing a legislative majority and forming the government.
