2008 Karnataka Legislative Assembly election

The 2008 Karnataka Legislative Assembly election was held in two phases on May 10 and May 16, 2008, to elect the 224 members of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly in India. This election was significant as it marked a crucial test for the incumbent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which aimed to assume power in the state for the first time. The main political contest was primarily between the BJP, led by B.S. Yediyurappa, the Indian National Congress, and the Janata Dal (Secular). The elections were conducted under the supervision of the Election Commission of India, with approximately 4.23 crore eligible voters participating. The results, declared on May 25, 2008, led to a decisive victory for the BJP, which secured 110 seats and subsequently formed the government, signaling a shift in Karnataka's political landscape.
