2003 Meghalaya Legislative Assembly election

The 2003 Meghalaya Legislative Assembly election was held on February 27, 2003, to elect the 60 members of the 7th Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. This election was significant as it followed the 1998 elections and was conducted under the supervision of the Election Commission of India. The Indian National Congress (INC) emerged as the dominant party, securing a majority with 29 seats, despite a fragmented political landscape. The election saw participation from various regional parties, including the United Democratic Party (UDP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which highlighted the diverse political interests of the state. The voter turnout was recorded at approximately 85%, reflecting active civic engagement. Following the election, Meghalaya witnessed a change in governance, with Mukul Sangma from the INC later assuming the Chief Ministership.
