2001 Kerala Legislative Assembly election

The 2001 Kerala Legislative Assembly election, held on April 16, 2001, was a significant political event in the Indian state of Kerala. This election determined the composition of the 13th Kerala Legislative Assembly. The contest was primarily between the United Democratic Front (UDF), led by the Indian National Congress, and the Left Democratic Front (LDF), spearheaded by the Communist Party of India (Marxist). The LDF, under the leadership of V. S. Achuthanandan, emerged victorious, securing 99 out of 140 seats, while the UDF won 41 seats. The election was marked by intense political campaigning and key issues such as economic development, social welfare, and governance. The results led to a significant shift in power dynamics within the state, ushering in a leftist government that emphasized pro-poor policies.
