2006 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election

The 2006 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election was held in Tamil Nadu, India, on May 8, 2006. This election elected the 14th Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly and was conducted to determine the state's political leadership for the subsequent five years. The principal political contest was between the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), led by M. Karunanidhi, and the ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), headed by J. Jayalalithaa. The election was characterized by numerous issues, including governance, welfare schemes, and caste dynamics. The DMK won a decisive victory, securing 96 out of 234 seats, which marked a significant shift in the political landscape of Tamil Nadu. As a result, Karunanidhi assumed the position of Chief Minister, ending Jayalalithaa's tenure.
