2002 Punjab Legislative Assembly election

The 2002 Punjab Legislative Assembly election was held on February 13, 2002, to elect the members of the 13th Punjab Vidhan Sabha, the legislative assembly of the Indian state of Punjab. This election followed the dissolution of the assembly in 2001, amidst political turmoil and issues related to governance. The major political contest was primarily between the Indian National Congress, led by Amarinder Singh, and the Shiromani Akali Dal, headed by Parkash Singh Badal. The elections resulted in a significant victory for the Congress party, which secured a majority with 62 seats out of 117. Amarinder Singh subsequently became the Chief Minister of Punjab, marking a shift in the political landscape of the state following years of Akali rule. The turnout for this election was reported at approximately 77%, indicating a robust engagement of the electorate in the democratic process.
