2002 Indian vice presidential election

The 2002 Indian Vice Presidential election was conducted on August 6, 2002, to elect the Vice President of India, succeeding Krishna Kant. The election emerged in the context of a politically charged environment following the 2001 presidential election, with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance endorsing Bhairon Singh Shekhawat as their candidate. The opposition, primarily composed of the Indian National Congress and its allies, nominated Congress leader Manmohan Singh. The election was marked by debates on issues such as governance and representation. Ultimately, Shekhawat won decisively, securing 409 votes in the electoral college, thereby affirming the NDA's position in Indian politics at the time.
