2001 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election

The 2001 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election was conducted from April 3 to April 29, 2001, to elect members of the 12th Legislative Assembly of West Bengal, India. This election was pivotal as it marked the end of over two decades of governance by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) and its allies, who had maintained a stronghold in the state since 1977. The primary contest was between the CPI(M)-led Left Front and the opposition Trinamool Congress (TMC) along with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress. The elections resulted in a significant victory for the TMC, under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee, leading to a historic political shift in the region.
